Islamic Estate Planning is considered an act of purifying or cleansing the individual, which involves voluntary and compulsory distributions made after death. Islamic Estate Planning is a relatively new area in Islamic Finance in Nigeria. In 2017, FBNQuest Trustees began educating Muslims through its flagship programme the Legacy Series, both on radio and in press. They also established partnerships with key players in the Islamic Finance space. FBNQuest Trustees helps with the management of Islamic Wills, but also other instruments like Zakat, Wakaf, Hibah, etc.
Islamic insurance services were formally launched yesterday in Kano, Nigeria. The launching ceremony of Jaiz Takaful Insurance was held at the premises of the palace of the Emir of Kano. The managing director of Jaiz Takaful Insurance, Mahmud Moussa Joof disclosed that the sector has currently recorded 25 to 35% global growth. He added that Takaful insurance was open to everybody as against contrary insinuations from certain quarters. At the ceremony, the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sunusi II lamented over the faulty payment system by insurance service providers in Nigeria. The Emir urged operators of the Islamic Insurance business to be honest to Kano people, while urging Kano people to form cooperative groups to access the Islamic insurance services, affirming that, subscribing to insurance services is permissible in Islam.
SunTrust Bank #Nigeria has signed an agreement with the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD) to establish a new non-interest banking window. The two institutions said they were determined to collaborate in order to establish a window that incorporates non-interest banking products and services in Nigeria. The CEO of SunTrust Bank, Mr Muhammad Jibrin, noted that the new offering is expected to attract investors from within and outside the country. On his part, Mr. Khaled Al-Aboodi of the ICD said he was looking forward to strengthening mutual efforts in establishing the non-interest window and promoting Islamic finance.
The Jaiz Foundation is set to kick start Islamic ‘Takaful’ Insurance in Kaduna, Kano, Lagos with head office in Abuja. As part of the final preparation, the Foundation held a week induction training for the staff of the organization. The chairman of Jaiz Takaful Insurance advised Nigerians to take advantage of the new insurance concept. According to Mananging Director of Jaiz Islamic Takaful Insurance, Momodou Musa Joof, the company shares profit by 80% to its participants who have not suffered losses. In the meantime, those who suffer losses would have been paid first before the distribution of profit. The elements which goes to the needy, which is called Zakat is also distributed before profit is shared. Prominent scholars like Prof Muhammed Nasirudeen Maiturare, the Vice Chancellor of Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida University, also participated in the induction training for the staff of Jaiz Takaful Insurance.
The Emir of Gwandu Muhammad Iliyasu Bashar has commended Jaiz Bank for its banking policies and principles of making life better for people. The royal father made the commendation at his palace when the Managing Director of the bank, Malan Hassan Usman, the Regional Manager, Dr. Nurudeen Liman and Habibu Isa Muhammad, the branch Manager of Birnin Kebbi paid him a courtesy call. Malan Hassan Usman expressed his appreciation of the support rendered by the Emir towards the establishment of the bank. He said the bank started operation 5 years ago with provisional approval to open three branches in Abuja, Kaduna and Kano but now the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has given full approval to the bank to open its branches nationwide. Currently the bank has 27 branches with 3 new ones coming next week.
Jaiz Takaful has unveiled its profit sharing insurance concept to the Nigerian public. The CEO of Jaiz Takaful Insurance, Momodu Musa Joof, said that their products are inspired by the need for customers to benefit from the contributions they pay as policyholders. He added that the concept is very transparent and practical. Jaiz Takaful Insurance is a public limited liability company registered with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and regulated by National Insurance Commission (NAICOM). It is among the first full-fledged Takaful insurance providers in Nigeria which are shariah compliant and it is now open for business to Muslims and non-Muslims across Nigeria and beyond.
Following the approval of the Lotus Halal Fixed Income Fund offer by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Lotus Capital Limited held the signing ceremony in respect of the Offer on April 14, 2016. The offer has an initial subscription size of N1,000,000,000.00 consisting of 1,000,000 units at N1,000 per unit. The Fund will be launched upon receipt of final approval from SEC. The primary objective of the fund is to generate returns from investments in Shari’ah compliant fixed income securities and contracts, while ensuring capital preservation. A minimum investment of N5,000 is required.
A group under the auspices of Adamawa State chapter of the National Council of Muslim Youth Organisations (NACOMYO) has resolved to pursue wealth creation and provide job opportunities for members of Islamic Youth organisations through Agriculture as a business. In a communique, the association further stated that the move was in line with the policy thrust of the current Buhari Administration in collaborating with NASR of the Central Bank of Nigeria, JAIZ Bank and Standard Micro-Finance Bank. The association produced a 10 point recommendation geared towards developing a framework which will see to the Socio-economic Development of the Muslim Umma in Adamawa State.
Jaiz Bank Plc has concluded plans to go national, its management has said. Speaking in Kaduna at the just concluded International Trade Fair organised by the Kaduna Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (KADCCIMA), the Bank’s Manager in Kaduna Halilu Murtala said additional branches would soon open in Lagos, Ibadan, Ilorin and Port Harcourt. He said that this was in line with the Approval-in-Principle issued to the bank by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to go national. The bank's plan is to add at least ten more branches to the existing network of 19 branches spread across the country before the end of this year. Arrangements in fulfilment of CBN’s requirements have already been finalised, he said.
The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Alan Yarrow has urged Nigeria to consider all sources of finance as a means for attracting investment. In particular the Mayor during a trip to Nigeria was keen to highlight the City of London as a leading centre for Islamic finance and stated Islamic finance can provide substantial investment for Nigeria. He suggested the North of Nigeria would in particular benefit from Islamic financial products. Yarrow who met with financial sector regulators and operators in Abuja last week, said London had the capacity to help Nigeria to deepen its Islamic financial system.
The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has urged the management of Jaiz Bank to embark on public awareness and financial education on the benefits of non-interest banking practice to attract more customers. Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim, NDIC's managing director, informed the team that the corporation had developed a non-interest banking deposit insurance fund framework in May. He said that the framework was designed to create a level playing field and provide deposit protection for depositors involved in non-interest banking and protect them against any possible losses. In addition, he said that the corporation was in the process of appointing committee of experts to advise it on all issues relating to Deposits Insurance Scheme (DIS) for non interest banking.
Nasarawa State governor,Tanko Al-Makura has appealed to the chairman, JAIZ Bank for the establishment of the bank in the state. The governor made the appeal in Lafia when he received a delegation of the bank led by its chairman, Dr. Umar Abdumutallab at the Government House. Al-Makura explained that the benefits of establishing JAIZ Bank in the state are enormous and capable of turning around the economic fortunes of the citizenry. Earlier, the chairman of the bank, Dr. Abdumutallab assured the governor that the bank would establish branches in Nasarawa State.
The International Chamber of Commerce Nigeria(ICCN) is set to admit about 11 new members at its 16th annual general meeting billed for Lagos this month. ICCN secretary-general, Mrs. Olubunmi Osuntuyi, said in a statement that the new members are: Anu Eso & Co., Enterprise Transport & Logistics Ltd., Heritage Banking Company Ltd., Jaiz Bank Plc., Nigerian-American Chamber of Commerce, Nigerian Ports Authority, Norfolk Partners, Onwuamaegbu & Co., Rand Merchant Bank Ltd., Sola Ephraim-Oluwanuga & Co. and Strachan Partners. The statement said the AGM which would be sponsored by Sterling Bank Plc would feature the traditional Post- AGM Talk to be delivered by Bismarck Rewane.
Jaiz Bank Plc, has declared a profit of N157.7 million for the financial year ended December 2014. By this, the bank has broken even after three years of operations as the first and only fully fledged non-interest bank in Nigeria. Chairman of the bank, Dr Umaru Abdul Mutallab said the profit was a feat considering that there was no platform yet for the bank to make income from its treasury management activities due to the absence of Sharia complaint liquidity instruments in the market. He therefore called for a national Sukuk bond, that would give them a wider range of investment opportunities. Shareholders of the bank called on the management to work seriously towards recapitalising it to fast-track its expansion to other parts of the country.
Nigeria's Jaiz Bank Plc has financed an executive aircraft as part of its programmes to venture into the aviation sub sector. The aircraft, which has been delivered to the customer, Aviation Resource Service Limited, was financed under the bank’s Ijarah wa iqtina. Under this model, the bank and the Aviation Resource Service Limited are co-owners of the aircraft based on a partnership arrangement whereby ownership is gradually transferred to the customer as it pays down. The general manager of Aviation Resource Service Limited, Tanko Yakubu, said that the company was a little bit skeptical at the initial stage of their discussion with Jaiz Bank but were proven wrong.
A Takaful insurance operator is to strategically consider the maturity matching approach as an investment mechanism in dealing with liquidity issues of the business at hand. Moreover, the issue of distribution of surplus in Takaful comes only after fulfilling or meeting the Shariah obligation of helping participants who have become victims of various risk crystallization. The Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) brought out a valid suggestions on adopting the principle of Iltizam bil Tabarru (pledge or commitment to donate). This gives the participants the ownership rights over the scheme while still having the firm commitment of mutual assistance (Ta’awuni) on the premise that a balance, if any, will be returned by the fund manager for distribution between the donating participants or owners of the fund in proportion to their initial contribution.
The chairman of the Board of Directors of Jaiz Bank Plc, Umaru Mutallab, has charged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and other regulatory authorities in the banking sector to urgently consider developing Sharia-compliant liquidity management instruments for non-interest Islamic banks to invest in. Moreover, the process needed to be expedited to create a level playing field for all the participants in the financial service sub-sector including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that so badly needed non-interest loans for their businesses, he added. Meanwhile a communiqué issued by Maidah Foundation, a network of Nigerian Muslim women entrepreneurs, prayed the federal government to strengthen the role of Islamic organisations in the creation of funds for the Nigerian entrepreneurs.
Jaiz Bank Plc has appointed Mahe Abubakar as the Executive Director in charge of Business Development. Until his appointment, Mahe was a General Manager/ Group Zonal Head of Zenith Bank Plc in charge of the Northwest region. He has a Master Degree in Business Administration from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and he is a qualified Dealing Clerk of the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Mahe has attended several trainings in and outside Nigeria. His appointment has been confirmed by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have announced plans to host the second International Sustainable Banking Forum in Lagos from March 3 to March 4. The forum will serve as a platform to share experience and build partnerships for sustainable banking in emerging markets. It is to attract policy makers from governments, multilateral development banks, financial institutions, civil society organisations and technical institutions. The IFC said that sustainable banking helped banks and financial institutions to understand better the benefits and risks of environmental and social impacts of their investments and loans.
Jaiz Bank yesterday donated relief materials to the Governor of Borno State for onward distribution to victims of the Boko Haram insurgency. While presenting the items, Dr. Abdulmutallab expressed his sympathy with the people of the state over their travails and donated rice, spaghetti and textile materials to cushion their sufferings. In his remarks, governor Shettima thanked the bank for the donation and pledged to judiciously utilise the items. The governor promised to partner with the bank towards harnessing the full potentials of the state. In order to to further demonstrate his support, the governor also promised to open a personal savings account with the bank.
