Emirates Islamic Bank has hired banks to arrange the issuance of U.S. dollar-denominated five-year sukuk.
It hired Emirates NBD Capital, HSBC, The Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector, and Standard Chartered to arrange investor calls that started on Monday.
The Rental Disputes Center (RDC) has received a generous donation of AED 500,000 from Emirates Islamic Bank to support insolvent tenants in rental claims disputes. The RDC has already set up the "Yad Al Khair Committee" to study the cases that require support from the donation. Awatif Al Harmoodi, General Manager of Operational Quality & Processes at Emirates Islamic Bank, said Emirates Islamic Bank is keen to expand its corporate social responsibility strategy to cover all segments of the UAE and will continue to cooperate with the RDC.
Applications for Islamic car loans in the UAE grew by 64.79% from 2015 to 2016. Despite growth in Islamic car loans, car loans based on traditional finance were more popular among UAE residents in 2016. Emirates NBD’s Feature-Packed Auto Loan was the most applied-for car loan in 2016. The second most applied-for auto loan of 2016 was that of HSBC, the third, fourth and fifth most applied-for car loans of 2016 were from Islamic banks. Emirates Islamic’s Auto Finance product came in third place, while Noor Bank’s Auto Finance and Ajman Bank’s Car Finance came in fourth and fifth respectively.
Mirroring the conventional banking sector, Islamic finance institutions are turning to IT directors to lead the change towards business innovation. Zubair Ahmed, head of IT and business innovation at Emirates Islamic Bank, says the IT department is no longer viewed as simply an enabler, but as a business innovator in its own right. Ahmed says many of the bank’s innovations are born in the IT department. The bank’s integrated tech innovation approach is yielding results. Emirates Islamic was recognised among Global Finance’s 2016 'The Innovators' of Islamic Finance for EI trade, a Shariah-compliant online trade finance and supply chain platform. In May 2016, it also became the first Islamic bank in the UAE to enable its customers to access basic account services via Twitter.
Emirates Islamic Bank has launched the sale of $750 million in sukuk with five years duration. Pricing for the instrument has been set at 220 basis points over midswaps after attracting orders from investors worth more than $2.2 billion. The pricing is tighter than the 225 bps over the same benchmark indicated earlier in the day, and well inside initial guidance of the 240 bps area. The issuance was arranged by Standard Chartered, Al Hilal Bank, Bank ABC, Dubai Islamic Bank, HSBC, Maybank and Noor Bank.
Emirates Islamic Bank completed a $50 mn (Dh183 mn) Collateralised Murabaha deal with France-based Natixis on the Nasdaq Dubai. This was the largest collateralised Murabaha transaction closed by Emirates Islamic this year, and the first of its kind executed on the Nasdaq Dubai Murabaha Platform. CEO of Emirates Islamic Jamal Bin Ghalaita said the transaction sets a precedent for other financial institutions considering Sharia-compliant financing.
Emirates Islamic Bank has mandated banks including HSBC for the sale of Islamic bonds. The sale of the dollar-denominated, benchmark-sized securities may begin this week and the sale is arranged by Standard Chartered, Emirates NBD, Dubai Islamic Bank, Noor Bank and Bank ABC. Emirates Islamic Bank last sold bonds in July 2012, when it raised $500 mn from securities with maturity of between five and six years.
Dubai Islamic Bank, the largest Islamic bank in the UAE, announced today that it had launched the first UAE Sharia Departments Forum 2016.The event was organized by the Bank, as Founder & Sponsor with the valued participation of other local Islamic banks, to create a platform where the Sharia departments of financial institutions across the country can meet to exchange experiences and share solutions to the challenges they face, with the strategic objective of developing the Islamic financial services sector in the UAE. The opening event took place on April 30, 2016, at The Palace Hotel in Dubai.
As the first event of its kind in the country, the Forum was led by Sharia department at DIB and featured the Sharia departments of other local Islamic banks including Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank ,Emirates Islamic and Al Hilal Bank . 'Sharia Audit' was chosen as the theme of the event this year with a very comprehensive series of panels, each of which was led by one of the participants, discussing a different element of the topic.
Emirates Islamic announced the launch of Social Banking, offering banking services via Twitter, making it the first Islamic bank in the UAE to offer banking services on a social media platform. Faisal Aqil, Deputy CEO, said banking via twitter is especially relevant given the UAE’s advanced social media and mobile phone penetration. Customers will be able to perform select transactions such as balance enquiry, view their last few transactions, and make enquiries about their accounts or credit cards with a simple tweet. To maintain privacy and confidentiality, the bank will only respond to customer queries via a direct message.
Dubai-based lender Emirates Islamic is laying off 200 staff to cut costs, according to a report. An un-named source confirmed that the bank was downsizing its workforce. However, Emirates Islamic declined to deny or confirm the report. Several banks in the United Arab Emirates have trimmed local operations as they look to reduce costs. Barclays is reducing its Dubai workforce by 150 people and closing its offices in Emaar Square. Earlier this year, the National Bank of Ras Al Khaimah also revealed that it will cut expatriate staff as it seeks to reduce its headcount by up to 250. The overall banking industry across the GCC is slowing because of low oil prices.

Emirates Islamic Bank (EIB) is willing to invest in the Moroccan Islamic banking sector in the two upcoming years. EIB’s CEO, Jamal Bin Ghalaita, said the bank is planning to explore the potentials of the Moroccan Islamic finance through a policy of acquisitions and obtaining operating licenses from regulating authorities. He added that the Moroccan Islamic banking market is among the markets with the greatest potentials for Islamic banking outside the GCC. Ghalaita also said the bank has the same planned investments in other countries with strong economic ties with the United Arab Emirates and GCC countries. He said the bank is also assessing opportunities for expansion in the coming period in Egypt and Turkey.
Emirates Islamic Bank has launched a four year Wakala investment option for customers, with an expected profit rate of 2.57 per cent per annum. Available on investment amounts ranging from AED 100,000 to AED 5 million, Emirates Islamic Bank’s latest product closely follows the launch of the three-year special Ramadan Wakala, introduced earlier this year. The four year Wakala investment option differs from conventional Wakala investments, with the profits being paid out on an annual basis to customers. Faisal Aqil, the bank's Deputy CEO - Consumer Wealth Management, said that customers are encouraged to develop a culture of saving through the launch of the bank's Sharia-compliant savings products.
Emirates Islamic Bank (EIB) listed two sukuk, each with a nominal value of 500 million dollars, a total of 1 billion dollars (AED 3.67 billion), on NASDAQ Dubai. The issuances raised the total value of Sukuk listed on Dubai’s exchanges to 12.08 billion dollars (AED 44.4 billion), the third largest amount in the world. The listing of EIB’s Sukuk on NASDAQ Dubai took place in September. The yield on the HSBC/ NASDAQ Dubai US Dollar NASDAQ Dubai-Listed Sukuk Index has fallen to 3.76% from 4.5% at the beginning of September, implying greater demand for the securities in the index.
Emirates Islamic Bank has tied up with a number of organisations to promote activities and charity campaigns to mark the spirit of Ramadan. The bank is the main sponsor for the Zakat Fund Ramadan Campaign, which aims to emphasise the importance of Zakat during Ramadan. In another major initiative, Emirates Islamic Bank is the Gold Sponsor for the Dubai International Holy Quran Award which aims to encourage young Muslims to memorise and understand the Holy Quran. The bank is also the main sponsor for the Al Ajer Initiative, to encourage people to understand the importance of forgiveness. Moreover, Emirates Islamic Bank is also supporting the Ramadan activities of Emirates Foundation for Youth Development that facilitates public-private funded initiatives. Emirates Islamic Bank has also teamed up with Dar Al Ber Society to provide vouchers worth Dhs500 to 100 underprivileged families during Ramadan.
Emirates Islamic Bank contributed AED 7 million to Dubai Healthcare Authority to support Rashid Hospital in purchasing computed tomography (CT scan) machines, which will be used for medical imaging procedures at the government healthcare institution. The donation reflects Emirates Islamic Bank’s commitment towards the development of the UAE healthcare industry by working alongside government hospitals. The financial aid to Rashid Hospital follows similar initiatives by Emirates Islamic Bank to healthcare institutions in the UAE in recent years. Emirates Islamic Bank’s recent contribution to Rashid Hospital is also in keeping with its objective to support charitable causes via a dedicated Zakat Fund at the bank. In 2012 alone, the bank’s Zakat Fund contributed over AED10 million to various charitable causes.
Emirates Islamic Bank has launched a range of special Shari'a compliant offers for commercial vehicle, machinery and equipment financing especially designed for the small and medium enterprise sector (SME). The programme is part of the bank's long term strategy to support companies in the SME sector. Under SME Vehicle financing, the bank will offer small businesses, finance for new commercial vehicles starting at 4% profit rate (flat) and at 5% flat rate for used vehicles. Similarly, under Machinery and Equipment category, finance will be offered starting at 5.25% flat rate for new machinery & equipment and 6.25% flat rate for used ones. The bank already provides financing solutions aimed at helping businesses manage cash flow, asset acquisition and expansion requirements.
Emirates Islamic Bank (EIB) reported a first quarter net profit of Dhs33.2 million, a 101 per cent increase compared to the previous year. The total income for the three months rose up by 42 per cent to reach Dhs443 million. EIB also reported a 42 per cent increase in operating profit before an impairment of Dhs195 million in the first quarter. The bank’s non-performing ratio as of March 31, 2013, improved to 19.2 per cent, from 20.4 per cent on December 31, 2012. EIB’s customer deposits stood at Dhs26.3 billion while the customer financing increased five per cent to Dhs20.7 billion. The bank maintained a financing-to-deposit ratio of 93 per cent, and a capital adequacy ratio of 16.3 per cent. According to Jamal Bin Ghalaita, chief executive officer of Emirates Islamic Bank, the bank has targeted segments of SME and priority customers and also continued to develop its commercial segment.
